Adena McCowan , LMSW
Supervising Mental Health Therapist
Adena has been married to her husband, JC, for 23 years, and together they are raising three amazing teenagers. Originally from a small town in southeast Colorado, Adena considers it a deep blessing to parent and do life with her family. Her journey in service began at Tabor College and later continued at Wichita State University, where she earned her Master’s in Social Work.
With over 25 years of experience in nonprofit work, Adena has dedicated her career to serving others. She first learned about HopeNet while following the work of JoLynn, our Community Impact Director. Once she explored the organization’s mission and vision, Adena knew this was where she was meant to be. During her graduate studies, she arranged to complete her internship at HopeNet—and the rest, as she says, is history.
Adena sees her role at HopeNet as a form of mission work: “loving on people,” as she puts it—just without the need to do the fundraising. She is passionate about removing barriers to mental health services and believes in the dignity and potential of every person.
“In a world where the human spirit is stifled by consumerism, families are focused on surviving not thriving, and there is hurdle after hurdle to obtain basic health and mental health, I love that we strive to take the walls down and provide hope, tools to thrive, and access to quality mental health. We have a great team, and just because it is affordable to everyone doesn’t mean anyone is getting a subpar service.”
Adena believes therapy can be a valuable tool for anyone, not just those in crisis.
“If we all had perfect parents and traumas never occurred, we might make it through life without therapy. However, our parents had traumas, or didn’t have all the tools or knowledge they needed—and traumas do happen.”
In her free time, Adena enjoys reading, doing just about anything with her kids, and spending meaningful one-on-one time with friends. Her favorite dessert is tiramisu.
